To: My Representative in Congress

Dear Representative ****,

I’m writing to you because I hope as my representative you’ll approach Congress to construct a Bill protecting household pets.

The recent Menu Foods sandal has opened up many problems that need to be addressed. Who’s responsible for checking imported material, and why aren’t imported ingredients for pet food checked? Why aren’t pet owners given more rights to protect their beloved pets? Why are pets seen has just processions, such as a watch, in the eyes of the law?

This country imports too much. There seems to be nobody available to check it all. I’ve heard conflicting reports about who checks imported ingredients to be used in pet food. Which leads me to believe nobody is checking it. What if the unchecked materials had gotten into our food supply? Congress needs to get a better grip on America’s imported goods.

Pets are not inanimate objects. They’re loved members of family. Sometimes they’re the only companion a person has left in this world. There is great emotional attachment to a family pet. A pet is an animal you care for along side your children. You watch them as they grow up together. A pet can comfort you in times of sadness. They have much more value than what the law recognizes. I hope as my Congresswomen you’ll work to change that.

There’re other animals I hope have more rights, such as a Seeing Eye dogs. I don’t have one myself, but I’m disabled and have friends with service dogs. These pets do much more than provide companionship; they’re somebody’s hands, eyes and ears. They cost a lot of money and time to train. It would be awful to loose them due to contaminated pet food. Do service animals have more protection than regular pets?

I hope Congress draws up a Bill protecting household pets. I hope as my representative, you’ll do what you can to see this happen. Pets are more than inanimate processions. I shouldn’t have to sit helplessly and watch my pet be slowly poisoned to death.

                                                                                                Sincerely,

                                                                                                                        Ivy K.

Responses/Results:

On 5/25/07 I received a letter from my representative in congress. They have created a bill dealing with pet food safety. H.R. 2108, the Human and Pet Food Safety Act of 2007. It was introduced on May 2, 2007. It provides for increased safety standards for foods imported from foreign counties. Plus the bill makes the recall process more efficient and allows penalties for non-compliance. The bill has been referred to the House Energy Commerce Committee. Please write to your representative in congress and ask them to support this bill.
